"Disruption: Climate. Change." Screening
hosted by New Organizing Institute
Picture
‘When it comes to climate change, why do we do so little when we know so much?’

Through a relentless investigation to find the answer, Disruption takes an unflinching look at the devastating consequences of our inaction.

The exploration lays bare the terrifying science, the shattered political process, the unrelenting industry special interests and the civic stasis that have brought us to this social, moral and ecological crossroads. The film also takes us behind-the-scenes, showing efforts to organize the largest climate rally in the history of the planet during the UN world climate summit.

This is the story of our unique moment in history. We are living through an age of tipping points and rapid social and planetary change. We’re the first generation to feel the impacts of climate disruption, and the last generation that can do something about it. The film enlarges the issue beyond climate impacts and makes a compelling call for bold action that is strong enough to tip the balance to build a clean energy future.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Cecil Corbin-Mark, the Deputy Director of Policy Initiatives at WE ACT for Environmental Justice, Inc and Kendra Glover, Program Manager of the NAACP General Counsel.

RSVP now and join us for this special screening of Disruption: Climate. Change.

Event Details: Thursday, September 25th | Doors Open at 6:30 PM | Film at 7:00 PM at New Organizing Institute, 1133 19th Street NW, Suite 850, Washington D.C. 20036

There will be a suggested donation of $10 at the door to help cover the costs of showing this film.

Highlights
"In America, the past decade has been our hottest on record.  Along our east coast, the city of Miami now floods at high tide.  In our west, wildfire season now stretches most of the year.  In our heartland, farms have been parched by the worst drought in generations, and drenched by the wettest spring in our history.  A hurricane left parts of this great city dark and underwater. "

"The United States has made ambitious investments in clean energy, and ambitious reductions in our carbon emissions.  We now harness three times as much electricity from the wind and 10 times as much from the sun as we did when I came into office."

"Within a decade, our cars will go twice as far on a gallon of gas, and already, every major automaker offers electric vehicles.  We’ve made unprecedented investments to cut energy waste in our homes and our buildings and our appliances, all of which will save consumers billions of dollars."

"So, all told, these advances have helped create jobs, grow our economy, and drive our carbon pollution to its lowest levels in nearly two decades -- proving there does not have to be a conflict between a sound environment and strong economic growth."

"Over the past 8 years, the United States has reduced our total carbon pollution by more than any other nation on Earth."

"Five years ago, I pledged America would reduce our carbon emissions in the range of 17 percent below 2005 levels by the year 2020.  America will meet that target."

"To be clear, this is not about just telling people to change their light bulbs or to buy a hybrid car.
This disaster has grown BEYOND the choices that individuals make."

"We need to put a pricetag on carbon emissions, and eliminate government subsidies for coal, gas, and oil companies."

Join us for a conversation about the intersection of street art and social change. See how artists, storytellers and designers can use their creativity to bring communities together; revitalize urban spaces; support social and environmental causes; and encourage dialogue about social issues. RSVP (it's FREE!) on Eventbrite: http://mediarise2014-streetart.eventbrite.com/

Street artists can be powerful change agents when collaborating with government, business and community allies. By re-imagining public space, they can bypass entrenched political institutions and traditional channels of civic engagement to connect directly with individuals to change not only the aesthetics of a given place but also the entire narrative of that community. By using their street art sensibility for commercial products, they can shift the perspective of consumers and brands toward socially or environmentally responsible purchase decisions. And by using their art in experiential exhibitions, they can spark dialogue in communities that otherwise might not share their voice.

Meet the Artists:
Gregg Deal
Kelly Towles
Rose Jaffe
Peter Franklin Chang (moderator)

// SPECIAL CALL TO ACTION:

Are you a street artist looking for wall space to paint a mural? Are you a property owner looking for an artist to transform your wall into a piece of art? Connect with each other using the TableTribes app at our event!

TableTribes is an information-sharing platform that was created to connect in more effective and meaningful ways with the people around us. 9/23: DC #ActOnClimate Rally @ City Hall

  • 9:00am Tuesday, 9/23
The Wilson Building - DC City Hall, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC,

The DC Council is back in session on Tuesday, September 23 -- it's time for them to act on climate!

Join DC residents for a rally in front of City Hall to ask the Council to take action on key legislation that could make DC a national leader on local climate solutions.

The DC Council is currently considering two bills that would help move our city away from dirty energy sources and send a signal that DC is a leader in addressing environmental injustice, degradation and climate change.

We are asking the Council to pass the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act of 2013 [B20-0481], which would divest city pension and health annuity funds from fossil fuels, and the Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard Amendment Act of 2013 [B20-418], which would close a loophole in DC’s Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard that funnels District funds to dirty energy.

Help us send a signal, loud and clear, that DC can be a leader for the rest of the country on climate change and clean energy.

Reverend Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus will speak at 9:00 am.

Interested attendees may RSVP at http://bit.ly/DCClimateRally

This rally is hosted by a coalition of environmental advocates and leaders in DC and the DMV region, including:

Chesapeake Climate Action Network * DC Divest * DC Environmental Network * 350 DC * Interfaith Power & Light (MD.DC.NoVA) * Global Green USA * Green Cross International * Center for Biological Diversity * Moms Clean Air Force - Washington, DC * Friends of the Earth U.S. * Sierra Club, Washington DC Chapter
