SUMMARY:

The latest word is that there will be an “honor system” extension until mid-April for folks who say they tried and couldn’t sign up by March 31st, but nonetheless, it’s time to get covered by the 2014 deadline or pay a 1% penalty on your income and a minimum of $95!

With the help of tax credits for individuals making up to about $50,000/year, a majority of the over 5 million Americans who signed up for private plans so far have a monthly premium cheaper than your phone bill so if you don’t have health insurance PLEASE SIGN UP so you don’t go broke if you get hurt or sick! Try the Enroll America Calculator to see how much you can save: http://gtcvrd.am/1chvUkq

And if you’re income is less than 133% of the U.S. poverty level (about $15,000 for a single person) you can qualify for Medicaid in DC, Maryland and any state that has not rejected the funds for it. (sorry, Virginia)

And remember that with the new Patient Protections under the law:

  • You are guaranteed that at least 80% of your premiums are being spent on health care

  • You can’t be denied health insurance because of pre-existing conditions

  • You can’t be dropped by your insurance company because you got sick

  • You can’t be stuck with lifetime limits on your coverage.

  • You don’t have to pay more because you are a woman.

  • And preventative care is free…so you don’t have to think twice about maintaining your health because you’re being nickle and dimed with more charges!

READ TRANSCRIPT:

Today’s topic is the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act and the March 31st open enrollment deadline for 2014. Starting in April, only people who LOSE insurance will be able to apply until the 2015 enrollment period begins at the end of the year.

First off, let me ask that if you don’t have health insurance or you know ANYONE who doesn’t have health insurance, please take action now to #GetCovered or #GetFriendsCovered at healthcare.gov or their local marketplaces.

The easiest thing you can do is join our facebook event and invite your friends and family to join too. You can also spread word via tweet, text, email and whatever way you to talk to people online! But feel free to talk to your friends in person and on the phone too.

Remember that after March 31st if you don’t have health insurance you will have to pay a penalty of at least 1% of their income and a minimum of $95. Next year it increases to 2% and a minimum of $695.

That’s not bad considering that between ambulances and emergency rooms and hospitals everyone has access to free health care in this country if they absolutely need it…but the ACA recognizes that the system cannot sustain itself unless everyone chips in a little bit.

But everyone also needs to be covered so you don’t go broke if you get hurt or sick!

Now, are you going to #GetCovered and/or #GetFriendsCovered?

If you’re sold that’s great, but if not or you want more information, I want to personally offer review what the law is about because the outrageous spin that has been created to demonize it is misleading.

There are some complicated things about it but the concept is very simple:

Patient Protection AND Affordable Healthcare!

As you may have heard, until the ACA the health insurance industry was an unregulated Wild West of a consumer market because most people get their insurance from their employers. But for over 40 million Americans that weren’t covered that way or weren’t eligible for Medicare or Medicaid or the Veterans Administration etc. they were subjected to steep costs if they tried to buy coverage as individuals and even though some insurance plans were affordable it was because they weren’t comprehensive and therefore could pull the rug out from under you when you get sick.

Now the easiest thing to make sure everyone can get affordable health care is a single payer system like in Canada but based on Bill Clinton’s experience in 1993 people in this country go ape shit about government-run health care, unless they get it when they turn 65, so conservatives came up with a universal healthcare option that included PRIVATE health providers and former Governor Mitt Romney liked it so much he passed it in Massachusetts and like 97% of the state is covered.

Well, since Democrats wanted a universal health care plan as well they finally adopted the Republican “compromise” program and it is very similar to the ACA.

So this is what it is:

As for the Patient Protection part, you probably have heard the numerous ways the law offers consumers guarantees that when they pay for health insurance they also GET health insurance!

For example…

  • You are guaranteed that at least 80% of your premiums are being spent on health care

  • You can’t be denied health insurance because of pre-existing conditions

  • You can’t be dropped by your insurance company because you got sick

  • You can’t be stuck with lifetime limits on your coverage.

  • And preventative care is free so you don’t have to think twice about maintaining your health because you’re being nickle and dimed with more charges.

And then there’s the Affordable Care part:

  • The “donut hole” that doesn’t completely cover senior’s prescription drug purchases as part of the Medicare Part D benefit is finally being filled

  • Young people can be covered by their parents until age 26

  • The federal government is also paying for 90% of the cost of Medicaid expansion to folks who make up to 133% of the poverty line so very low-income people can get covered. Sadly, despite the generous offer, the Supreme Court ruled that states can reject this money and about half are because of their governor or legislatures opposition to it.

  • And finally, if you make more than that and need to buy health insurance on your own, you can join a giant pool of millions of other Americans via the Health Insurance Marketplace found on healthcare.gov that offers open competition from private insurers for your business.

Meanwhile, on top of that, there are tax credits for people making up to $50,000 a year so everyone can reasonably afford coverage that could cost less than your phone bill.

Now, some more wealthy people might find their premiums increasing but that usually is because they were buying a cut-rate plan before that didn’t have the patients protections of the ACA so remember that “you get what you pay for” and these families might have been purchasing a bill of goods.

This is why, as a result of the new regulations, some insurance companies need to dump these shoddy plans and they are “dropping” some customers but it has nothing to do with whether these people can get affordable AND protected coverage elsewhere.

And that is also why the Congressional Budget Office is estimating that 2 million people might leave the workforce because of ACA. This has led to some fear mongering but remember that won’t happen because they were laid off but because they can finally get affordable AND protected health insurance on their own for the first time.

The situation today is the equivalent of people working themselves to the bone because of high inflation where gas or milk costs $50 to the gallon. Making things more affordable gives us more freedom…to retire or stay at home with your kids or start a business.

One of the biggest obstacles for entrepreneurs is the risk of leaving their job and losing their benefits so the ACA can even help facilitate the creation of small businesses and the innovations they create!

Therefore, as the CBO analysis suggests, our once-uncontrollable health care inflation is decreasing due to the increased competition and influx of new customers into the system.

So, the ACA is working and I hope you will join me in the campaign to give Americans health coverage. Enclosed is some background information that might be helpful as we raise awareness in the closing days of open enrollment.

*** STATE OF THE UNION RECAP ***

I hope you were as inspired by the State of the Union as I was!

Despite the cold and poll numbers mostly driven by an out-of-touch media narrative that spins successes into failures and ignores GOP obstruction, a great crowd came out to see President Obama explain where the country was going (read more about results below) and where it should be headed that emphasized the importance of citizenship and “Opportunity For All.”

Thanks to everyone who joined us, including DC Shadow Senator
Paul Strauss and David Bransfield of Young Invincibles who discussed the effort to sign up and recruit friends for Obamacare by 3/31. Here are some pics:

http://dcireporter.com/dc-senator-paul-strauss-at-sotu

We were pleasantly surprised to be joined by two mayoral candidates, City Council Member Tommy Wells and Busboys and Poets’ owner Andy Shallal!

For more about our speakers, partners, host and more visit the N4P event page:

A key theme was making this a “Year of Action” and although that might sound far-fetched considering the obstacles it is true that we need to learn the lessons of 2010 by working hard for the cause of PROGRESS starting now and not wait until Election Day 2016.

Hopefully we can all learn from the story President Obama told of Sgt. Cory Remsburg who proves why we should never quit. Due to a bizarre coincidence, I walked through the hotel Cory was staying at after the speech and got a picture with him:

With both congressional mid-terms and dozens of statewide races that will decide the direction of the country considering how important the states have been on issues like Marijuana and Marriage Equality, this is a critical moment for our movement as it embarks on coming up with mass scale momentum in a post-Obama campaign era.

We need to look at the choice before us to go forward or backward, then collectively stand up and yell out the windows…

“I’m hopeful as Hell and I’m going to progress America some more!”

That means relentlessly working on the State of our Movement, not just the State of our Union, because our nation benefits from the Mainstream Majority actively fighting for its future.

That is why I hope to expand our opportunities to discuss how N4P and the broader Obama coalition can come together as strong as ever in 2014. We need to leverage our “crowd-sourcing” prowess to discuss what is working and what isn’t working then finding ways to make us better.

In the meantime, we can start by having everyone from our candidates on the ballot to the local grassroots volunteer needs to…

“Ask not what the Movement can do for you,

ask what YOU can do for the Movement!”

That actually means we should give to the Movement BUT we also expect the Movement to give back to us on a regular basis. It involves building a “network” of mutually-beneficial relationships that inform and enrich us all NOT just offering a series of “top down” asks for time or money.

We shouldn’t have to wait around for an election to be won or a piece of legislation to be passed to feel rewarded for participation in a cause. What good is a potentially significant outcome like an increased minimum wage to a White House intern who is asked to do vital work for our nation without pay?

But aside from tangible rewards and policy positions, giving to the Movement means sharing a message that can inspire and be effectively spread to family, friends and neighbors. Leadership Expert Simon Sinek delivered the second most popular
TED Talk ever on the importance of knowing “Why” not just “What” our movement is or “How” our movement succeeds. Here is the difference he points out:

“I Have A Dream!”

(NOT “I Have A Plan….here are my bullets!”)

So, please join us by sharing your story, your ideas and your vision in 2014 and let’s work together to use all the 21st Century tools at our disposal to make them spread so this can be another year of Hope and Change for PROGRESS.

Thanks for being part of our Network For Progress!

Regards,

Jim McBride
