Join Network For Progress, a media-savvy Advocate, social-savvy Community and movement-building Resource for forward-minded Grassroots Action,
as we host a bi-partisan meetup with a DC Comm Tech For Progress speaker series program on how to host and promote successful events as well as how to be most effective in interacting with your fellow guests!

Whether you are looking to build connections to build a Movement for a cause or build your Career or Business for your own professional development, the ability to host and/or connect at events is extremely valuable to network-building.

Relationships are the single most important marketing tool to building influence and the best way to develop relationships is face-to-face through offline social engagement.

And what is so “bi-partisan” about the program? Since mastering events is not an ideological skill, we will be joined by Chad Barth of Eventbrite, who worked at the Republican National Committee for eight years and served as
Deputy Strategy Director for Political Technologies and can provide a unique perspective that even many smart Democratic organizers might not have about the use of relationship-building on the right.

We will also discuss a special EVENT that Network For Progress would like help with planning for 2014!

AGENDA:

As you are probably well aware, we are being reminded about both our great victories and our great losses this week. We have gone from passing the Affordable Care Act due to the hard work of 2008 to dealing with a radical brand of anti-Democratic hypocrisy known as the Tea Party that took over the House in 2010 with a phony call for “no taxation without representation.”

And on October 1st, we saw the huge success of the Affordable Care Act launch with 4.7 million hits on the White House web site and 190,000 calls with 1,200 sign ups in Kentucky and 4,000 accounts created in DC alone.

Since they can’t complain about about tax rates they agreed on in December or a deficit falling faster than at any time since WWII, offering secure and affordable health care for working families that most WANT to pay for is the reason the GOP-controlled House chose to shut down the federal government and furlough 800,000 workers to reduce national income by $1.3 billion a week and cost DC about $200 million a DAY. This is against the wishes of 81% of Americans and comes off the GOP already killing more than 678,000 public sector jobs already.

The good news is that DC government has been spared so far thanks to some political hardball by Mayor Gray, as the
House is allowing temporary funding of city services.

Shutdowns have happened before but this isn’t just about ideology this time…it is part of the transparent effort to
subvert our democracy with unlimited obstruction to disrespect the President that America elected to REPRESENT us.

Think about it, as much as Democrats hated George W. Bush and the Iraq War, did they ever truly threatend to shut down the government until it ended? Majority Leader Reid made that point in a
letter to Speaker Boehner.

VIDEO & TRANSCRIPT:

President Obama on the Government Shutdown and Obamacare Launch http://bit.ly/16h6dfj

According to insiders, if Speaker Boehner allowed a vote to keep funding the government without any new demands attached it would pass but this is the responsibility of every Member that has been complicit in this anti-Obamacare propaganda campaign…not just one man.
But he is the gatekeeper and circumventing his decision would be a lengthy process.

He was right about one thing though:

“If you shut the government down, it’ll end up costing more than you’ll save.

And this is before we discuss the debt limit, which if the U.S. reaches on October 17th without it being lifted would mean our nation would have to default on our debt…or face
outrageous ransom demands. Otherwise,  Obama might risk impeachment by invoking the 14th Amendment’s passage that the “validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law… shall not be questioned.”

I hope you will join me in educating yourself and sharing information on this fight and how to take action….it’s time to join #teamdemocracy by fighting to end the #gopshutdown and help America #getcovered.

*** ACTION #1: TELL CONGRESS YOU WANT TO END THE #GOPSHUTDOWN ***

Tell @SpeakerBoehner and your Congress Members you want a “Clean” 6-Week Continuing Resolution to end #TeaPartyShutdown and then to #ShutdownSequesterCuts that Democrats have already given up fighting in order to keep the government open:

THIS IS THE WORST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU IF YOU DON’T SIGN UP:

Despite the GOP fearmongering the health insurance mandate would mean a 2.5% tax hike on only a minority of the 16% of Americans above the poverty line who currently use the ER as their health care plan if they continue to do so after being offered more affordable options and tax credits to opt into the market.

#PROGRESSOFFICE HOURS

with Planning Meeting & Resume Swap

PLEASE RSVP:

http://916progressoffice.eventbrite.com

1pm-9pm Monday, September 16th

(5pm Resume Swap, 7pm N4P Planning Meeting)

MLK Library’s Dream Lab

Digital Commons (Conference Room 5)

901 G Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20001

@ Metro Center or Gallery Place

Summer is cooling off and the business of DC is heating up again, with big Virginia and Health Care campaigns kicking into high gear as well, so N4P is hosting a combined Career Progress, Comm Tech 4 Progress and Act 4 Progress event with a Progress Office Hours: Co-Working & Co-Organizing Day for Progressives, Democrats, Hope Mongers and Civic Leaders at the MLK Library’s Digital Commons (Conference Room #5) in Chinatown!

Job Seekers, Entrepreneurs, Freelancers, Organizers and Volunteers are all welcome to get out of their pajamas at home or take a break from their latte addiction at Starbucks to join us….just RSVP in advance if possible.

If you want to get involved in the political/civic grassroots or professional scene OR connect with others who do, then stop by and we will plug you into various opportunities you can work on immediately….and crowdsource new ones.

As you may know, the new “Digital Commons” (http://www.dclibrary.org/digitalcommons) will soon become home to a Dream Lab coworking community and is a great space for using free computers and wifi-enabled meeting rooms. So, feel free to come by with a charged laptop or smart phone…and even if you don’t!

At 5pm, we will do a Resume Swap and Career Discussion with anyone interested in improving their job search.

At 7pm, we will break for a Planning Meeting to discuss our ideas for Network For Progress (Generation Obama 2.0) and Progress Office now that Jim’s summer hiatus is over, including advocacy for the Affordable Care Act launch (10/1) and Virginia Gubernatorial Election (11/5) as well events such as meetups and fundraisers like our annual date auction in October! Movement-building categories include Community(Events, Outreach), Engagement (Communications, Technology), Development (Careers, Organizing, Leadership), Action (Campaign, Advocacy, Service) & Operations (finance, management).

There is plenty of space in the Digital Commons so these sessions will be separate from anyone co-working or co-organizing on their own.

At 9pm, anyone interested in continuing the coworking party is welcome to join us as we walk over to 1776, the amazing entrepreneurial/startup campaign and event space in McPherson Square, for the DC Night Owls Meetup – an after hours coworking community of self-starters turning big ideas into exciting projects! RSVP (space is limited): http://www.meetup.com/dcnightowls/events/135398802/

PARTNERS WANTED: Do you have an organization that could use a place to meet OR would want to collaborate with other groups OR that would be willing to sponsor us with resources ranging from laptops to snacks? Email Jim @ network4progress@gmail.com.

*** EMAIL & CALL CONGRESS ON STUDENTS LOANS BY 6/30 ***

YDA’s “Don’t Double My Rate!” Campaign

Federal student loan rates are set to double on July 1 if Congress doesn’t take action.  Send an email to your members of Congress today telling them to keep the current insterest rate of 3.4 percent.

Whether you are currently enrolled in college, graduated a few years ago, or hope to attend someday; whether you were first in your family to earn a higher degree or you continued a proud tradition, the opportunity of a college education was made possible, for many of us, by access to affordable student loans.

Unfortunately, tough economic conditions in recent years and skyrocketing tuition costs have created unique challenges for our generation.  To make matters worse, if Congress doesn’t take action, federal student loan rates are set to double on July 1 making access to a college education even more difficult.

Let me be clear, no one who is willing to work hard and improve the quality of their life and that of their community should mortgage their future in order to attend college.  Republicans in Congress continue to threaten the economic stability of our generation by failing to act with a deadline approaching.

The American dream is built on a foundation of hard work, equal opportunity and upward mobility. Access to a college education is an important part of that foundation, and Republican inaction and misplaced priorities put us all at risk. For America to be truly competitive in the 21st century global economy, we need more college graduates, not fewer.

The Terry McAuliffe for Governor <http://www.terrymcauliffe.com/> campaign in Virginia is in full swing, and we are recruiting progressive friends in Maryland, DC, North Carolina, and beyond to come be a part of the movement we are building on the ground, beat back the Tea Party, and keep Virginia moving forward this November.
We are hosting two strategy briefings with senior campaign staff in the next two weeks, a June 15th and 16th weekend of action talking to voters, and weekly, on-going phone banks to build out our out of state volunteer program.
Details for each event are below, and folks can sign up for all three at one link:www.tinyurl.com/friendsforVA2013 (follow up information will follow:
1. Canvass during our next Weekend of Action Saturday, June 15th and Sunday, June 16th at locations all over Virginia.

GUN REFORM UPDATE:

With Gabby Giffords and Newtown parents behind him, President Obama made one of the most passionate speeches of his presidency on Thursday to condemn the outrageous cowardice of the U.S. Senators who voted down a modest advance in gun safety:

(Gabby’s response in New York Times op-ed: http://goo.gl/E9kXI)

The good news is it is very apparent that this fight has just begun as it took about six hours after the background check bill was defeated for gunmen to shut down an ENTIRE CITY as we learned the truth that it takes up to 9,000 GOOD GUYS WITH GUNS to stop a bad guy with a gun.

Unfortunately, now that the voting is over people seem to be galvanized to protest but that means we have more momentum now than we did last week so join the Movement now!

THANK OUR LOCAL SENATORS Barbara Milkuski, Ben Cardin, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner (he voted against assault weapon ban & limited magazines though) for their support of gun reform AND CONFRONT THE 45 SENATORS WHO OPPOSED REFORM via Email/Facebook/Tweet:
